I know I may seem a little late to the game, but here is my take on the Bobby Petrino saga at Arkansas.  I wanted to wait and see how it all played out, and it has.  Watch  the video to find out the winners and losers from this mess.

Grow Your Roll: Jan.2 Bowl Edition!

Here are some plays to help you make some cash today while you watch the bowl bonanza!

GEORGIA (-3) over Michigan State:

Unlike last year's Dawg squad, this year's group has been ready to play every week.  There will be no repeat of the3 lethargic embarrassment against UCF in last year's Liberty Bowl.  Michigan State is a great team, but they were soooo close to smelling the roses in Pasadena.  Do they want to be in Tampa?

GEORGIA 27, MICHIGAN STATE 20

OHIO STATE (+2.5) over Florida:

The Gators are playing a de facto home game in Jacksonville, but can the Gators or their fans get fired up for this game?  Obviously, we will hear the Urban Meyer angle ad nauseum throughout the day, but it'll be the Buckeyes who are playing to please their new coach.  The Gators will look to right the seemingly sinking ship.  The only reason I would pick them is Ohio State's poor history versus the SEC, but you and I both know Urban has been coaching the Buckeyes up for the last month, even though he won't be on the sidelines today.

So, far the college football bowl season has been pretty uneventful. I have watched some games like the Baylor vs. Washington game for example, was an exciting, high scoring track meet, but overall college fans have not seen much that would make them jump out of their recliners. Don't worry the big bowls are still to come, and a SEC National championship is sure to heat up fans this winter. Here are my predictions for the important bowls. The best two teams are playing in the BCS National Championship game and that is all college football fans can ask for. LSU maybe the best team in the country(and could be the best college football defense I have ever seen), but it is tough to beat a team as good as Alabama twice. Bama could have won the 1st game, but they missed two field goals. Alabama should find the mark this time and get the win in a defensive struggle. A win for Saban will put his name among the great coaches of all time!

Clean Old-Fashioned Hate Video Preview! UGA/GT 2011

It's been way too long, but I'm finally back on the blog and I'm now going to be doing videos (technically "vlogging" but I hate that word) instead of spending tons of time typing.  I hope you enjoy the new format, as this will allow me to get a lot more information/opinions/predictions on the site.  I just got this brand-new flip cam that I'm going to be using, but I had to battle Black Friday and its crowds to secure it.  I am running on fumes now, but wanted to get something up on the site for tomorrow's Clean Old-Fashioned Hate game between Georgia and Georgia Tech.

Below you will find my analysis and prediction for the game.  Enjoy and please feel free to comment!  If you do comment, please be productive to the discussion.  We don't need comments like "You must have just got off your job at Wal-Mart" or "You're retarded."  Save the disparaging remarks for Paul Johnson, please.

Pick I Like:
ARKANSAS (-9.5) over Auburn:  The Razorbacks are coming off a big comeback win over Texas A&M last week and head home to seek revenge for last year's loss at Auburn, where they allowed 65 points.  That won't happen this week.  The Arkansas offense is gathering steam, while Auburn's scored 13 points last week against an overrated South Carolina defense.  It's a tall task to win in Fayetteville, and Auburn will find that out this week.  Arkansas 35, Auburn 20

Pick I Love:
GEORGIA TECH (-14.5) over Maryland:  The Yellow Jackets are leading the country in scoring at over 51 points per game, while Maryland's offense has struggled to score all year, with the exception being a 2nd half flurry after being down 34-10 to West Virginia.  The only thing that could keep this from being a slam dunk is Tech's defense.  They haven't shut anyone down this year, and could be without star LB Jeremiah Attachou and LB Daniel Drummond.  Georgia Tech 45, Maryland 28


Grow Your Roll Game of The Week:
CLEMSON (-20.5) over Boston College:  After last week's huge road win over Virginia Tech, this has the makings of the classic letdown game, something Clemson fans know about all too well.  Except, Boston College is terrible.  They've lost home games to Northwestern, Duke and Wake Forest and were destroyed at Central Florida.  Three touchdowns seems like a lot to give up, but BC doesn't score many points, and that makes for a easy cover.  Clemson 38, Boston College 10

What I Learned: College Football Week 5

I finally got to spend some good old quality time in the recliner, in front of the television this Saturday, so of course I spent it watching college football.  Here is what I learned while watching Saturday's Week 5 action:

DBTH Team of the Week:  Clemson Tigers

No team did more to increase their championship stock this weekend than Clemson.  They thoroughly dominated Virginia Tech, in Blacksburg no less, to step to the forefront of the ACC.  This coming after a huge win over consensus ACC-favorite Florida State the previous week.  I picked Clemson #23 in my Preseason Poll and had them in the Strong Plays section of my Over/Under CFB Preview, but they have exceeded my expectations.  Clemson has the reputation of fading down the stretch, so it will be interesting to see how they finish, especially with tough road games at Georgia Tech and South Carolina still on the schedule.

It's not a good idea to stomp on the other team's logo on the 50 yard line.
Dan Mullen and Company thought it would be a great motivational tactic to stomp on the Georgia "G" at the 50 yard line before their noon kickoff with Georgia.  It turned out to be great motivation-for Georgia.  The Real Dawgs played an inspired first half and jumped out to a 21-3 lead.  They coasted to a 24-10 win. 

In the aftermath of the beatdown, Mullen tried to backtrack and say it was a "misunderstanding," even insinuating it was Georgia's fault but judging by the smirky grin he had during the incident (watch the video below), it was anything but that.

Texas A&M is not a 2nd Half team.

For the second straight week, the Aggies blew a comfortable second half lead, this time to Arkansas at Jerry World in Dallas.  I really thought this would be the Aggies' year, and they are improved, but two brutal collapses have them looking like a usual middle-of-the-pack Big 12 South team. They will have to make statements against Oklahoma AND Texas if they want to be considered a threat in the Big 12.  I don't see that happening.

Brady Hoke is a great coach.

Hoke parlayed his resurrection of San Diego State into his dream job in Ann Arbor, and it looks like he will return the Wolverines back to the top of the improved Big 10(or12).  I realize a 58-0 thrashing of Minnesota isn't reason to anoint him the next Bo Schembechler, but they've made all the big plays so far this year, especially in the comeback over Notre Dame.  To support my claim, just look at the defensive numbers.  Last year they couldn't keep a high school team out of the end zone, this year, opponents are not getting there.  That's ALL ATTITUDE, and that comes from the head coach.

Wisconsin might be the second best team in the country, and Russell Wilson could win the Heisman.

We all knew before the season that Alabama and Oklahoma would be great, but Wisconsin's 48-17 thrashing of Big Red-Lincoln will enter them squarely into the national title discussion.  The Badgers are so good on the line of scrimmage that I think they could stack up with every team in the country.  I picked them #3 in my preseason poll, higher than anyone else, and Bret Bielema and crew are proving me right so far.

Finally, this Steve Spurrier/Stephen Garcia love/hate soap opera/train wreck is Must-See TV!

By letting Garcia hang around and get chance after chance to act like an adult, Spurrier has hamstrung his season and his program.  The Gamecocks lost at home to Auburn Saturday, and should've lost to Georgia a couple weeks ago, if not for stellar defensive and special teams performances.  Connor Shaw proved earlier in the season that he's not capable of leading the offense, so the Ole Ball Coach has had no choice but to hitch his wagon to Garcia.  Garcia's penchant for stupid turnovers, like forcing a deep ball into double coverage for a pick with the lead on Saturday, reiterates the known fact that he has no clue how to be a leader.  The only thing Garcia leads is all 1-A (FBS) quarterbacks in interceptions. Now he has now been benched in favor of Shaw, according to Spurrier.  If this lasts as long as his suspensions, he'll be back in the 3rd quarter of this week's game against Kentucky, when Carolina is down 17-7.

Is This The Worst Call In College Football History?

So if it goes outside the uprights, they still get a point?

Debating the worst officiating calls of all-time is a great discussion had often by passionate sports fans, especially when their team is on the short end.  I am in no way a Toledo Rockets fan, but they got absolutely hosed in their game against Syracuse on Saturday.

In the books, it looks like a hard-fought, 33-30 overtime loss to the Orange, but in reality, it may be the greatest heist in the history of college sports.  In case you missed it, watch the video below:

At the time, Syracuse had just gone ahead 29-27 and were wrongly awarded the extra point when it clearly missed wide left, as you can obviously see in the picture and video here.  If called properly, the last second field goal by Toledo would've given them a 30-29 win, instead of a 30-all tie and eventual overtime loss.

What separates this as one of the all-time egregious calls is the fact that it is NOT a judgment call!  It's either good or no good.  How could a college referee, STANDING DIRECTLY UNDER THE UPRIGHT, miss such an obvious call?  This isn't like, for example, the Ohio State/Miami 2002 national championship game, that was extended by a very debatable pass interference call.  Good/No Good is not a judgment call like holding or pass interference.

What's even worse is the fact that they had to BOOTH REVIEW AN EXTRA POINT!  And they STILL got it wrong!  It's hard to screw that up in real-time, but to not get it right in slow-motion?  Conspiracy theorists unite!

When I think of the most egregious officiating decisions, two come to mind, one from college football:

The "5th Down" Game helped Colorado share a national championship with Georgia Tech in 1990.  The other one comes from the MLB Playoffs a few years back, when Phil Cuzzi called this Joe Mauer RBI double foul, even though it lands fair by six inches.  These types of calls make me so mad, because there is no judgment to be made.  It's cut and dry.  If the ball lands inside the line it's fair.  You get four downs to get a first down or score.  If the ball goes outside the uprights, you don't get a point.

Toledo has asked that Syracuse vacate the win, but in the end, all they will get is a half-hearted apology that holds no weight at all.  The only circumstance different in this game is the fact that they could use replay, did, and some how STILL managed to miss the call!  That's why I think this is the worst call ever.  Do you know of another terrible call that could beat this one?  If so, let me know!

I'm BAAACK! And Here's The Rest Of My Way Too Late Preseason Top 25

Alright, so if you don't know already, I am a football coach myself and I've had a really busy start to the season. I dropped off at #13 as I released my preseason Top 25, so here's the rest of it, if you care:

I know that just about everyone else picked an Oklahoma/Alabama championship game, but there's a reason for that:  those are the two best teams in the country.  I still think Virginia Tech and Wisconsin are the darkhorse favorites to sneak in the title game if the Tide or Sooners stumble.

I'm disappointed that I drank the Kool-Aid on Notre Dame, as I usually don't buy the national hype they undeservedly get each year.  I got caught up in the second year of Brian Kelly, thinking this could be the year the Irish step forward and rejoin the national spotlight.  I guess I was wrong.

I'm sure I'll get the most grief for my #9 Georgia pick, put let me say this: they have played their two toughest games already and could be favored in the last 9.  Remember Virginia Tech last year?  They lost to Boise and FCS James Madison before running the table and winning the ACC Championship.  Chances are it won't happen for Georgia, but don't say it can't.

What do you make of the first 3 weeks of the college football season?  I promise I'll be on here more, dropping powerful knowledge about college football and the NFL.  You can buy that hype!

SO STRANGE, SO SAD

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN?

I was talking to a NC State fan recently and he was telling me that State would not even miss Russell Wilson this season. I told him "you are crazy." Wilson looked awesome in his Wisconsin debut and Mike Glennon looked very fair. Glennon is NC State's 6-6 240 lbs. QB and has all the skills to be really good one day. I love a prototypical pocket passer like Glennon, but what I told that State fan next is very interesting in retrospect. I said," Glennon may be good, but he is not going to be better than Bryn Renner(UNC QB)."

Well, Renner looked awesome Saturday. I thought Renner would be good this year, because he almost put UNC Senior T.J. Yates on the bench last year. Why is this so impressive? One reason is that Renner was just a freshman then and another reason is T.J. Yates is playing well in the NFL this year. Well, Renner was not only good on Saturday, he was unbelievable. Renner had arguably the most impressive QB performance of the weekend. Now no one is comparing Renner to Andrew Luck yet. UNC was beating up on James Madison to be fair, but James Madison did beat Virginia Tech last year. Renner's statistics in his first start were incredible. Renner was 22-23(96%), 277 passing yards, 2 TDs in the air and another on the ground. UNC looked really good in all facets of the game. Quinton Coples looked unstoppable on defense. Coples looked like the National Defensive Player of Year candidate that he is.

North Carolina would have won 10 games last year minimum(if it wasn't for the suspensions), and "what could have been," still stings Tarheels' fans today. Then to add injury to insult, right when the sun seems to be peaking through the clouds and turning the sky Carolina blue, UNC chancellor fires Butch Davis a week before the season starts. The sad thing is that UNC could have been really good this year, and maybe they still will be, but Butch had the Tarheels ready to break through and contend for an ACC Championship every year. UNC has the best college basketball program in the nation and UNC fans were ready to have a football program to match. So was the University who just added seats to the stadium, including brand new luxury boxes.

Here is the weird thing, sources close to Davis say, "he never saw it coming." So, with all the rumors swirling, it would make sense that there was bad blood on both sides(Davis' side and the University's). Yet, with all the verbal jabbing that has gone on between both parties, Butch Davis was at the game Saturday. A source who I spoke to personally, sat in the the one of new luxury boxes right near the box Davis was in. The source even rode in the elevators with Davis on Saturday. With everything that has happened, why and how was Davis at the stadium, and so publicly visible. All the events that have transpired with Davis and the UNC football program have have been strange, to say the least, but to UNC football fans, the whole situation is so sad!
