Is This The Worst Call In College Football History?
So if it goes outside the uprights, they still get a point? |
In the books, it looks like a hard-fought, 33-30 overtime loss to the Orange, but in reality, it may be the greatest heist in the history of college sports. In case you missed it, watch the video below:
At the time, Syracuse had just gone ahead 29-27 and were wrongly awarded the extra point when it clearly missed wide left, as you can obviously see in the picture and video here. If called properly, the last second field goal by Toledo would've given them a 30-29 win, instead of a 30-all tie and eventual overtime loss.
What separates this as one of the all-time egregious calls is the fact that it is NOT a judgment call! It's either good or no good. How could a college referee, STANDING DIRECTLY UNDER THE UPRIGHT, miss such an obvious call? This isn't like, for example, the Ohio State/Miami 2002 national championship game, that was extended by a very debatable pass interference call. Good/No Good is not a judgment call like holding or pass interference.
What's even worse is the fact that they had to BOOTH REVIEW AN EXTRA POINT! And they STILL got it wrong! It's hard to screw that up in real-time, but to not get it right in slow-motion? Conspiracy theorists unite!
When I think of the most egregious officiating decisions, two come to mind, one from college football:
The "5th Down" Game helped Colorado share a national championship with Georgia Tech in 1990. The other one comes from the MLB Playoffs a few years back, when Phil Cuzzi called this Joe Mauer RBI double foul, even though it lands fair by six inches. These types of calls make me so mad, because there is no judgment to be made. It's cut and dry. If the ball lands inside the line it's fair. You get four downs to get a first down or score. If the ball goes outside the uprights, you don't get a point.
Toledo has asked that Syracuse vacate the win, but in the end, all they will get is a half-hearted apology that holds no weight at all. The only circumstance different in this game is the fact that they could use replay, did, and some how STILL managed to miss the call! That's why I think this is the worst call ever. Do you know of another terrible call that could beat this one? If so, let me know!

Is It Time To Hit The Panic Button Braves Fans? YES!
![]() |
Braves Fans have a lot to worry about! |
I realize there are 162 games in a season and I often caution baseball fans on not making too much about one game (check out my Red Sox column from April), but last night's final out collapse against the Marlins has me wondering if the Braves will even make it to October. When you're up 5-4 with 2 outs and no one on in the bottom of the 9th, with one of the best pitchers in baseball on the mound, you expect to win 100% of the time. When Chipper Jones loses a chopper in the lights (really?) and ex-Brave Omar Infante hits a walk-off homer, it might be time to pack it up and take it to the house.
Even if the Braves do hold on and make the playoffs, is there any confidence that they can advance? Jair Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson are still on the DL. Derek Lowe sucks so bad that Braves fans wish he was ON the DL. Brian McCann is hitting .167 since coming off the disabled list. Freddie Freeman is in a funk. The bullpen is taxed. None of the rookies brought up to replace the injured starting pitchers have made a strong impact. These are all valid concerns regarding the Braves chances.
The bottom line is this season looks an awful lot like last year's. The Braves limped in to the playoffs, couldn't score runs and were sent packing in four games. If the Braves draw Milwaukee in the first round, this may be the case again. I don't think even the most optimistic Braves fans could say the team on the field now can beat the Brewers or Phillies in a series. The only way the Braves advance to the NLCS is if they can draw Arizona in the first round. The Diamondbacks are young and inexperienced in October, something the Braves could exploit.
Let me say this: I am one of those optimistic Braves fans. I do think the Braves will make the playoffs, but I'm realistic at the same time. I don't see them advancing unless some key pieces get healthy and other right the ship in time for the postseason.
I'm BAAACK! And Here's The Rest Of My Way Too Late Preseason Top 25
Alright, so if you don't know already, I am a football coach myself and I've had a really busy start to the season. I dropped off at #13 as I released my preseason Top 25, so here's the rest of it, if you care:
#12 Nebraska
#11 Notre Dame
#10 Texas A&M
#9 Georgia
#8 Florida State
#7 LSU
#6 Oregon
#5 Boise St.
#4 Virginia Tech
#3 Wisconsin
#2 Oklahoma
#1 Alabama
I know that just about everyone else picked an Oklahoma/Alabama championship game, but there's a reason for that: those are the two best teams in the country. I still think Virginia Tech and Wisconsin are the darkhorse favorites to sneak in the title game if the Tide or Sooners stumble.
I'm disappointed that I drank the Kool-Aid on Notre Dame, as I usually don't buy the national hype they undeservedly get each year. I got caught up in the second year of Brian Kelly, thinking this could be the year the Irish step forward and rejoin the national spotlight. I guess I was wrong.
I'm sure I'll get the most grief for my #9 Georgia pick, put let me say this: they have played their two toughest games already and could be favored in the last 9. Remember Virginia Tech last year? They lost to Boise and FCS James Madison before running the table and winning the ACC Championship. Chances are it won't happen for Georgia, but don't say it can't.
What do you make of the first 3 weeks of the college football season? I promise I'll be on here more, dropping powerful knowledge about college football and the NFL. You can buy that hype!

AFC Preview and Predictions!!!

NFL Preview, NFC

The Rams will not be a really good team, but they will be good enough to win the worst division in football. The Rams QB Sam Bradford should be improved this year, building on a pretty solid rookie season. Plus, the Rams can run the ball and have some nice young defensive players who should be better this year as well. This spells playoffs for the Rams. Don't worry if the Rams start out slow. The first half of their schedule is tough, but the second half is easier. The Rams will come on strong the second half of the season, plus they have a weak division that should help the Rams get some wins. Rams' fans should not get too excited though, they will have to wait a few years for a deep playoff run.
Arizona Cardinals (8-8)
2nd
Kevin Kolb should give the Cardinals some stability at Quarterback, but there are too many questions Kolb will have to answer before the Cardinals make the playoffs.
San Francisco 49ers (6-10)
3rd
Jim Harbaugh seems to have the makings of a good NFL head coach. The 49ers have a nice running game and some really good defensive pieces, but like many NFL teams they have too many questions at QB to be really good this year.
Seattle Seahawks (3-13)
4th
The worst team in the worst division, you can draw your own conclusions. Peter Carol is a smart guy, but he can't play quarterback.
